One of the required files for the mod system to work is called "file_list.txt"
This file is then process with the script below which allows the program to determine the type of mod files that are listed. "items" indicates it is a list of items for the game while "crafting" indicates that the file is full of crafting recipes.
I am trying to make modding simple and available to all users regardless of programming experience. This means that there is ZERO programming required. You just have to follow the examples given and stick to it. It isn't hard to type a file name and the desired item name. Especially if there is a lot of documentation with it.
