Turn-based real time combat!
After a few days of designing and programming I have at last created the clean combat experience I was aiming for. The more or less final version™ of it can be seen below.
The ugly monstrosity seen below is the original design document for the combat. You'll notice that it is VERY similar aside from a lack of symmetry and general visual pleasantness.
I can't stress enough how important it is to plan your designs prior to approaching the implementation process. I spent at least 30 minutes planning and drawing out the combat interface on the horrible MS paint shown above.

Using A LOT of references and putting in over 8 hours of work I was able to produce this little guy you see here on the right. Along with creating him I created a clothing system that allows for equipped gear to be shown on the character. I have an excellent template system in place that should reduce the overall time needed to add new outfits.
Additionally I plan to add more choices to the character such as skin tone and possibly hair style.
