I spent most of today putting together this video.
I wanted to try my hand at a real script and a structured video. This topic is obviously quite general but I thought it would be a fun one to cover.
Each day seems shorter than the last and that's not a good thing. I wish I could keep up with my YouTube channel as well as my Twitch and this website. I work on Rock God Tycoon and Project Explore every moment I feel inspired. I am making good progress though. I will probably put together a real schedule one day but it is hard to do that when I have to take care of so many random problems throughout the day. I am doing a pinch of free lance work on the side and the client paying me is spontaneous which makes my day-to-day schedule unpredictable.
Rock God Tycoon Progress Report!
Setting An Example
It would be wonderful to release Rock God Tycoon whilst being showed off by YoYo Games. There is such a negative public view of Game Maker and what it is capable of. It's just a tool like any other and I want people to see that you can make games with much more visual fidelity than Undertale (no offense to Undertale, I'm a huge fan). The other sad side of Game Maker is that it seems to only be popular for mobile game developers which is embarrassing when it has so much potential usage.
I plan to really publicize the engine behind Rock God Tycoon. Just as Undertale has done (kinda). I want to say, "Hey look how pretty this game and how well it runs. Look at all this content and how much fun you have playing this." The engine behind a game doesn't matter as much the games design and execution. So an engine shouldn't determine whether or not the game is good.
I have been using Game Maker (in general) for around 11 years now and Game Maker: Studio for about 4 years. After seeing the same IDE for as long as I have, you start to grow tired of the same interface and visuals. As a result of this I felt inspired to redo a lot of the UI myself and recolor the code editor.
Since the majority of the colors are based on a blue color scheme I have appropriately named this skin Fresh Water.
Making skins in GM:S
My experience making this skin was a bit a frustrating for a few reasons. The biggest complaint I have is that the images are kept inside of a DLL rather than a .ZIP or something a bit more accessible. The positive side of using a DLL is that most people won't take apart the pack and re-distribute it. The other complaint I have is that editing the colors for the IDE is a bit unintuitive. It's hard to see the results of your color choices since you can se the GM:S editor update in real-time.
Where can you get this skin?
I have posted this skin on itch.io for $1. If you are interested, here is a link:
